doin it for myself

so i've definitely been MIA for the past week or so, because i've been MOVING, and as i type this now i am officially MOVED. except for my clothes, which are sitting in hampers right next to me and decidedly not in the closet where their home is. but other than that, everything's MOVED.

i live in carterville, illinois, which is a tiny town very close to carbondale, illinois, which is where a huge university is that i'm hoping to get into for the fall. my apartment complex is actually for another college called john a. logan college, so it's a lot like the apartments i had at my undergrad, only this time my roommmate and i decided to decorate like adults instead of overgrown teenagers so it's not nearly as shitty. my mom came down with me and decorated the crap out of this place, so it looks awesome.

it's a nice place. everyone seems like they're really happy to live here. i don't know about myself yet, i need some more time. and a goddamn job.

but anyway. in between moving and looking for a job and hanging with the roommate i have been marathoning TEEN WOLF. that's right, you assholes

okay first of all, how is this such a good show. i don't understand. it's on mtv. IT'S ON MTV AND I'M SUPER INTO IT. does not compute.

second of all, the fact that it's ridiculous only makes it better. it's like they're not even trying to make it realistic or believable in any way, which really, i appreciate.

(like how scott's mom just...has not noticed anything wrong whatsoever. and the one time that she is around to notice something weird happening, she literally threw her hands up in the air and said, "no more parenting for me today!" and walked away. like, lol, seriously.)

(also how often does derek hang out at the high school? just lurking around so he can look intimidating to someone standing alone on the lacrosse field? or overhear conversations so he can be way too involved in these teenager's personal lives? i know it's a wolf thing but come on man, get a hobby.)

(and seriously, stiles is literally the only character who is not a complete idiot and nobody listens to him. he's like the guy in the horror movie who's always saying, "uh, maybe we shouldn't go into that dank, poorly-lit cellar, i mean there is a serial killer loose in these woods, you know!" and everyone's just like lol stiles, shut up. it's fucking hilarious.)

thirdly this SHOW IS SO GAY. everyone's always shirtless or naked or pulling up their shirts or something, and also fighting shirtless or ripping their shirts off while fighting, or throwing each other up against walls and messing with each other's shirts. it's the most masculine fueled show ever, except for how they all spend a lot more time focused on all this shirtless wrestling than on ravishing their cute girlfriends. like the greeks! see, it's classy.

but honestly folks, tell me that they did not create derek and stiles specifically for fandom. obviously now that derek's the alpha, obviously he and stiles are going to fight a whole bunch and have gobs of UST, and eventually they will get married or mate or whatever it is that grumpy werewolves do with their quirky human life partners, and stiles will be the den mother and cook dinner for everyone every night in the huge rebuilt hale house and have some kind of job lecturing on folklore at the local university while derek takes care of the puppies and fights off roaming omegas and evil pack leaders. OBVIOUSLY THIS WILL ALL HAPPEN.

but no, let's get serious for a second.

i don't think i've seen a show aimed at teenagers that has teenagers actually acting like teenagers in a really long time. scott, especially, is so incredibly sixteen that it makes me laugh and wince all at the same time. jackson, too - holy shitballs, that boy has issues. and lydia is obviously the Queen of Everything. and allison! everyone's awesome, basically, and they all have really sharply written dialogue and personalities that really make sense, considering they're a bunch of sixteen-year-olds.

and there are some moments that just make me go, "YES!" at the television like a huge dork. like when stiles gets his dad drunk in order to find out more about the investigation and says to himself, "i'm going to hell" because YES, FINALLY SOMEONE ACKNOWLEDGES WHAT A SHITTY MOVE THAT IS. (seriously, did anyone else want to slap harry potter in the face for doing that to slughorn and using the memory of his dead mother? like i know he was trying to save the world and everything, but jesus christ that's cold.)

and also, when his dad mentions that he misses stiles's mom, and stiles doesn't know what to say so he just stands there? ugh. perfect.

and the season-long plot line is very well-done, i thought. i was kind of expecting it to be dawson's creek with werewolves, honestly, but no, there's MYSTERY and HUNTERS and ANGST. how you're not sure until about halfway through that there even is a mystery, and from that point on it just goes into overdrive. how they weaved together the two villains - the Alpha, and then the hunters - kate argent, specifically - was very clever and made the little moments of revelation that much better (like when she tells derek that it wasn't them who killed laura hale, etc).

and can we talk for a second about this poor guy's life? holy shit. so his entire family is murdered, he leaves town, then his remaining sister and alpha is murdered, by his uncle he eventually finds out, who he is then forced to kill because he's gone nuts?

and let's think about this kate angle for a second. so how old is derek? the wiki site for the show says he's 23, but really? 23? that sounds fishy to me. i also doubt that site because it says derek and laura were at school when their family was killed, but in the flashbacks on the show, the fire happened at night, so. plus in the series premiere stiles says he's "just a few years older than us" which would put him at 20 or so, would be my guess.

but either way. if he was 20 that would put him at 14 when the fire happened, if he was 23, he would've been 17. kate argent is obviously currently in her 30s, at least. that means that she was in her mid/late 20s when the fire happened, and when she SEDUCED A TEENAGER in order to get close enough to MURDER HIS FAMILY. so she's not only psychotic, but a creepy statutory rapist, too. this is so incredibly fucked up, i can't even. no.

no wonder he's so grumpy, i mean, really.

but i am so ready for this fandom you have no idea. werewolves and mating and hunting and whatever, BRING IT ON. i'm ready. i'm totally ready. let's do this. YES.

Lydia and Allison have way more actual interaction that Allison and Scott. In fact, nearly everyone has a more genuine interactions than Allison and Scott. WAY TO SELL THE LURV, MTV.

But, yeah, this show is a shameless guilty pleasure. Emphasis on shameless because there's just no way--none--to feel intimidated by any aspect of the fandom. It's like a giant kiddie pool, only you're allowed to make dick jokes. So, so many dick jokes.

Also: Peter. Oh, Peter. Who balances being a cray-cray psycho with dispering color palate dress advice and hitting on Stiles. (He's the Hale catnip.)

Oh, there's no denying they're adorable. But that's not enough to generate actual sympathy or, y'know, interest; it feels too forced, too sugary, too much like the difference between a cocoa truffle and a Tootsie Roll. The writers' take, especially towards Allison's characterization, is so heavy handed, it's hard to see the cuddly goodness as anything other than plastic. :(

Poke some holes in the box, MTV! The kitten needs fresh air.

I think the thing with Allison is that they've never actually put much thought into her as an individual; they're too caught up hyper-emphasizing her being Juliet to Scott's Romeo. And that's...cheap.

You know what? I'd like someone to defend the hunters' stance in a fic. (By which I mean defend in a way that doesn't rely solely on Peter Hale's example because, let's face it, Kate was asked for it.)

He went his first two years of undergrad, then moved west. He has fond memories though -- there were lots of cool people there!

bring it ON, BABY!!!

Ok, wait, first off, WELCOME TO YOUR NEW ABODE!! You are *way* more coherent than i am post moving - congratulations!!! (i always like nesting in new spaces), and i hope this one suits and is awesome.

now, back to the other stuff, I KNOW RIGHT I COULD NOT BELIEVE IT EITHER MTV MADE CRUNCHY GOODNESS!!

But I guess I'm a weird awkward shipper because I totally was all over Derek/Scott in the first half of the season. Not that I haven't actually read a buttload of Derek/Stiles fic now and am totally on board with that ship, but that's also just because I am a fic!hoar, honestly.

And yes, the Kate Argent thing is seriously creepy no matter what way you think about it. I *think* they screwed themselves on that one, but I also wonder if some of it is down to that mentality you get in highschool where everyone who is not in highschool falls into the category of "older" and it doesn't matter if they're 20 or 30 or 40, it's all just older? (ok, no, i know, the writers should have actually put that together because they're all of age, but whatever, continuity? on a werewolf show?)

Also, Derek *seriously* deserves some hot Stiles action to pay him back for the absolute misery his life has been, like, seriously. All the hurt/comfort EVER.

Oh, also, you didn't mention, and this is my favorite part - the werewolf transformations are sometimes SO adorable they're not like scary slavering beasts but just, you know, adorably over-fuzzy! SO CUTE!

so i give you my derek/stiles tag on pinboard (which, ok, only has three fics on it, but there will be more, soon!):
